The major failure of reproduction accounting for over 60% of cases is related to abnormal genetic setup of the chromosomes in the egg (oocyte), in the sperm, or in the embryo(s) which is the product of a fertilized egg.

Any of these conditions, as well as abnormal deletions or rearrangements of chromosomes, which affects the genetic information, can lead to an early shortened pregnancy.
